What to Check Before You Buy a Pre-Owned RV

Even with an inspection report in hand, it pays to walk through any used RV yourself and know what to look for. A few focused checks can tell you a lot about how a rig has been cared for and what it may need in the years ahead.

Roof, seals and signs of water

Water intrusion is the most common and costly problem in older RVs. Look at the roof membrane and the sealant around vents, skylights, the air conditioner and edges for cracks or gaps. Inside, press gently on walls and floors near windows, doors and the corners of slide-outs. Soft spots, staining, wrinkled wallpaper or a musty smell can point to moisture that has been there a while.

Chassis, tires and running gear

Check the date codes on the tires, not just the tread. RV tires often age out before they wear out, especially on units that sat in storage. On a motorhome, ask about engine and generator hours and service records. On a travel trailer, look at the hitch, axles, brakes and breakaway switch, and confirm that your tow vehicle can safely handle the trailer's loaded weight.

Systems you will use every day

  • Run the furnace, water heater and refrigerator on both propane and electric where applicable.
  • Test the water pump, faucets, toilet and shower, and look under sinks for drips.
  • Extend and retract slide-outs and awnings fully.
  • Check that batteries, the converter and outlets work, and that propane and carbon monoxide detectors are present and in date.

Think about how you will travel

Idaho trips can range from paved campgrounds near Boise to forest roads, high-elevation passes and cold shoulder-season nights. Consider whether a unit has the clearance, tank capacity and insulation for the way you plan to camp. A smaller trailer may suit weekend trips better than a large rig that is harder to park and store.

Once you have narrowed your choice, it helps to plan ahead for upkeep and budget. Our service and parts team can talk through routine maintenance, and the financing page explains how to start exploring payment options before you commit.
