Planning Your Visit to Table Rock

Table Rock sits in the foothills on Boise's east side, above the Old Idaho Penitentiary and the Warm Springs area. The butte is crowned by a large illuminated cross that has been a local landmark for decades, and on a clear evening the summit gives a wide view across downtown, the Boise River corridor and the Treasure Valley toward the Owyhee Mountains.

Trails and terrain

Several routes lead to the top, and they are part of the wider Ridge to Rivers trail network that laces the Boise Foothills. The climb is steep in places, with loose, sandy gravel that can be slippery on the way down, so shoes with good grip make a real difference. There is very little shade, which matters in an Idaho summer. Early morning or the hour before sunset is usually the most comfortable time to go. Bring more water than you think you need, and keep an eye out for rattlesnakes in warmer months.

Trail etiquette and conditions

The foothills trails are shared by hikers, runners, dog walkers and, on some routes, mountain bikers. Staying on marked paths helps protect the fragile sagebrush habitat. After rain or snowmelt, the clay-rich soils turn muddy and are easily damaged. Ridge to Rivers generally asks visitors to turn back if they are leaving deep footprints, so check current trail conditions before heading out.

Coming in an RV

The road up to the summit area is narrow and winding, and parking near the top is limited. That makes it a poor fit for large motorhomes or anything towing a trailer. A more practical plan is to leave the rig at your campground or a larger lot in town. Then drive a smaller vehicle to the trailhead, or start from one of the lower access points near Warm Springs Avenue. If you're traveling with a towed car, this is exactly the kind of outing where it pays off.
