Choosing a Mini PC for Gaming on the Road

A compact gaming computer can turn an RV into a comfortable base for downtime after a long day of driving or hiking. Rather than naming specific models, which change quickly, it helps to know which features matter most when you are living with limited space and limited power.

What to look for

  • Graphics capability: Many mini PCs rely on integrated graphics, which handle older and lighter games well. If you want to play demanding titles, look for a model with a stronger integrated GPU or a dedicated graphics chip, and expect higher power draw.
  • Power consumption: This is the biggest consideration for RVers. A machine that uses less power is far easier to run from a battery bank and inverter when you are boondocking. Check the wattage of the power adapter and compare it with what your system can supply.
  • Cooling and noise: Small cases can run hot. A rig parked in summer sun can get warm inside, so good ventilation and a fan that is not too loud make a real difference in a small living space.
  • Ports and connectivity: HDMI or DisplayPort for the RV's TV, enough USB ports for controllers, and solid Wi-Fi and Bluetooth help you avoid extra cables.
  • Mounting and storage: Many mini PCs can be mounted behind a screen with a VESA bracket, keeping them secure while the RV is moving.

Setting up in your RV

Secure the computer and any peripherals before travelling so nothing shifts on rough Idaho back roads. A surge protector is worthwhile when plugging into campground shore power, which can fluctuate. If you plan to play online, remember that campground Wi-Fi is often slow, so download games and updates before you leave town and favour titles that work offline.

If you are unsure whether your coach's electrical system can comfortably handle extra electronics, our service and parts team can talk through batteries, inverters and outlets. And if you are still choosing the rig itself, browsing our new RVs with your entertainment setup in mind can help you find a layout with a good spot for a screen and a small computer.
