RV Travel With a Newborn: Practical Gear and Planning Tips

Plenty of Idaho families wonder whether a road trip is realistic once a new baby arrives. With some planning, an RV can actually be one of the easier ways to travel with an infant. You bring your own bed, kitchen and bathroom, you can stop whenever the baby needs feeding or changing, and you avoid packing and unpacking at a new hotel every night.

Safety comes first

The most important rule is simple: a baby should ride in a properly installed, rear-facing car seat whenever the vehicle is moving. In a motorhome, that means using a forward-facing seat position with a lap or lap-and-shoulder belt designed for a child seat, or tethering points where they exist. Check your owner's manual, and follow the seat manufacturer's instructions. Many families tow a travel trailer with a pickup or SUV instead, so the baby rides in a regular passenger vehicle. Nobody should ride inside a towed trailer.

Useful items to pack

  • A compact travel crib or bassinet that fits the floor space of your rig, giving the baby a firm, flat sleep surface.
  • Blackout covers for windows to help with daytime naps at bright campgrounds.
  • A portable white-noise machine to mask campground sounds.
  • Bottle-washing and storage supplies, plus extra fresh water if you will be camping without hookups.
  • A baby carrier for short walks and trails.
  • A thermometer for the cabin, since RV interiors can heat up or cool down quickly.

Keep trips short at first

Start with a night or two close to Boise before attempting longer drives. Plan driving legs around nap times, and choose campgrounds with electrical hookups so you can run heating or air conditioning reliably. It also helps to know where the nearest hospital or clinic is along your route, and to ask your paediatrician for advice before travelling with a very young baby.

Choosing the right rig

Floor plans with a separate bedroom or bunk area can give parents a little privacy and a quiet spot for naps. If you are comparing layouts, browse our new RVs and used RVs, and have your systems checked before a family trip through our service department.
