Getting the Most from an Idaho RV Season

Idaho rewards RV travellers who plan around its geography. Within a few hours of Boise you can move from high desert to river canyons to alpine lakes, and each setting asks something different of your rig. Before a trip, think about elevation, road surface and how far you will be from services. Mountain passes put extra load on brakes and transmissions, gravel forest roads test tyres and suspension, and remote campgrounds often mean dry camping without hookups.

A simple pre-trip routine

  • Tyres: check pressure cold, look for cracking on the sidewalls, and remember that RV tyres can age out before the tread wears down.
  • Brakes and lights: test trailer brakes, running lights and turn signals with a helper before leaving the driveway.
  • Seals and roof: inspect roof sealant and window seals, especially after a hot summer or a hard winter.
  • Water and propane: sanitise fresh tanks at the start of the season and check propane connections for leaks with soapy water.

If anything looks worn or uncertain, it is worth having it checked before a long drive. Our service and parts page explains the kinds of maintenance help available.

Matching the rig to the trip

Many first-time buyers choose an RV based on floor plan alone, then discover it is awkward on the roads they actually want to travel. A compact travel trailer or smaller motorhome is easier to fit into older Forest Service campgrounds, while larger units suit established RV parks with full hookups. Consider your tow vehicle's rated capacity, how many nights you typically stay in one place, and whether you will travel in shoulder seasons when cold nights make insulation and furnace performance matter.

Browsing both new RVs and used RVs side by side can help you see the trade-offs between modern features and value. Whatever you choose, book popular campgrounds early in summer, carry extra water for dry camping, and check road and fire conditions before heading into the backcountry.
